Omoyele Sowore Advocates ₦500,000 Minimum Wage for Nigerian Workers
The African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has urged the federal government to raise the national minimum wage to ₦500,000 per month for Nigerian workers.
Speaking as a longtime human rights activist, Sowore challenged citizens to support leaders who genuinely prioritize workers’ welfare, rather than those who treat labour as an adversary.
His statement follows the joint demand by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for a ₦500,000 minimum wage, which was presented at the Nigeria Rights of Workers Summit held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
Reacting to the unions’ position, Sowore remarked, “Oh finally! It is encouraging that the leadership of the NLC and TUC have finally arrived at the same position the African Action Congress adopted long ago.”
He added, “Nigerian workers deserve a national minimum wage of no less than N500,000. The demand is both necessary and long overdue in the face of the country’s economic realities and soaring cost of living.”
Sowore concluded by calling for unity and action: “Now that there is consensus, the focus must shift from declarations to action. Let’s unite and fight until Nigerian workers receive a living wage of at least ₦500,000.”
