Monaco have officially completed the permanent signing of forward Ansu Fati from Barcelona in a deal valued at approximately £9.5 million (€11 million). The agreement sees the 23‑year‑old commit to the Ligue 1 side until 2030, bringing an end to his 15‑year association with the Catalan giants.
Fati’s return to the Principality follows a productive loan spell during the 2023‑24 campaign, where he netted 12 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions and rediscovered the form that once made him one of Europe’s most promising youngsters.
Early Promise and Setbacks
Bursting onto the scene as a 16‑year‑old in 2019, Fati was heralded as Barcelona’s brightest talent and a potential successor to Lionel Messi. After progressing through La Masia, he made an impressive impact in his debut season, scoring eight goals for the senior team.
However, his trajectory was derailed by a serious knee injury in November 2020. Despite being handed the iconic No. 10 shirt following Messi’s departure in 2021, recurring fitness issues limited his playing time and prevented him from reaching the lofty expectations placed upon him.
A subsequent loan to Premier League side Brighton in 2023 failed to revive his career, as further injuries curtailed his minutes. Fati returned to Barcelona for the 2024‑25 season but struggled to cement a place under head coach Hansi Flick, eventually departing after amassing 29 goals in 123 appearances for the Blaugrana.
Now settled at Monaco, Fati aims to regain consistency and contribute to the club’s ambitions in both domestic and European competitions.
