Solbakken Highlights Ivory Coast’s Physical Challenge
Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken described Ivory Coast as the most physically demanding opponent his side has encountered at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He warned that matching their strength will be essential if Norway hopes to advance past the last‑16 match at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
“They are a very, very physical team, extremely strong, and that’s the first thing we have to match,” Solbakken said. “If we can meet that physicality, we can retain our defensive and offensive identity and give ourselves a chance.”
He added that the contest is likely to be tight and evenly balanced, with luck possibly deciding the outcome.
Although Norway has adopted a possession‑based approach inspired by Pep Guardiola’s philosophy, Solbakken stressed that technical skill alone will not suffice against an Ivory Coast side known for its pace, power and direct attacking style.
The Norwegian boss also lauded striker Erling Haaland, who has already scored four goals in the group stage, calling him one of the finest forwards in world football.
“He’s a great leader for us, leading by example on the pitch,” Solbakken remarked. “I think he also inherits great physicality from his parents – perhaps his mother. He possesses an innate sense for goal‑scoring, a feeling that the ball will find him, which cannot be taught. Combined with his explosive speed and strength, and his reputation as a good teammate on and off the field, he ranks among the best players globally.”
