Alphonso Davies Likely to Miss Canada’s World Cup Opener
Alphonso Davies, the Bayern Munich left‑back, is set to miss Canada’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after picking up a hamstring injury during the Champions League semi‑final second leg against Paris Saint‑Germain on May 6. The club confirmed he will be out for “several weeks”.
The injury adds to a disrupted season for Davies, who managed only 13 Bundesliga appearances for the German champions.
Canada’s World Cup campaign begins on June 12 in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by games versus Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver on June 18 and June 24.
Speaking from a training camp in Charlotte ahead of the Friday squad announcement, head coach Jesse Marsch said: “I believe Alphonso will feature at the World Cup. I don’t think he’ll be fit for the June 12 opener, but we’ll see how his recovery progresses.”
Davies was named in Canada’s 32‑man provisional squad, though Marsch noted the defender will only join the team on the eve of the June 1 friendly versus Uzbekistan in Edmonton.
Before the tournament, Canada will also play the Republic of Ireland in Montreal on June 5 as part of their preparation.
The Canadian international last appeared for his country in March 2025 against the United States, when he sustained an ACL tear. He also missed the March 2026 friendlies versus Iceland and Tunisia due to another hamstring problem.
Davies represented Canada at the 2022 World Cup, scoring in a 4‑1 group‑stage loss to eventual semi‑finalists Croatia.
