Why Victor Osimhen Kept His Number 45 at Galatasaray
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has clarified why he decided to keep his number 45 shirt rather than switch to Galatasaray’s historic number nine jersey for the upcoming season.
After a successful loan spell, Osimhen completed a permanent transfer to the Turkish champions and quickly became one of the team’s standout players. His goal‑scoring form and consistent performances have endeared him to the Galatasaray faithful.
Many supporters anticipated that Osimhen would inherit the iconic No. 9, a shirt traditionally worn by the club’s leading strikers and previously associated with Mauro Icardi. Instead, the 27‑year‑old opted to remain with the number he has worn since arriving in Istanbul.
Speaking to Turkish outlet Sabah Spor, Osimhen said sentiment outweighed any commercial benefit.
“I believe you will sell more shirts, but I think you will understand my perspective. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray,” he stated. “I want to continue with the same number.”
Since making his move from Napoli permanent, Osimhen’s influence has only grown. He recently opened his pre‑season scoring account in Galatasaray’s entertaining 3‑3 draw against Rennes in Istanbul, signalling his readiness for the new campaign.
By sticking with number 45, Osimhen hopes to maintain the positive momentum that has accompanied the jersey throughout his time at the club.
