Social media campaigner Martins Vincent Otse, better known by his moniker VeryDarkMan (VDM), has triggered a wave of online responses after delivering a stern warning after a recent protest in Ibadan, Oyo State, was disrupted.
He issued the remarks after reacting to an incident that took place during the “Save Our Children” demonstration, which aimed to secure the release of kidnapped students, educators, and other individuals from the Oriire Local Government Area in Oyo State.
A widely shared video on social platforms showed alleged aggressors assaulting the demonstrators and trying to break up the rally.
In response, VDM voiced his outrage over the alleged assault and cautioned that any future efforts to disrupt peaceful gatherings by his followers, referred to as the Ratels, would not be tolerated.
He declared: “This is to inform the public that after what happened at the protest in Ibadan with the thugs that attacked us, anytime the Ratels come out for a peaceful protest again, any thug that comes out to disrupt the protest has been warned in advance.”
The controversy emerged just days after reports surfaced of an alleged assault on demonstrators in Ibadan during a march demanding the release of kidnapped schoolchildren.
His remarks rapidly attracted attention online. Although some supporters endorsed his position, asserting that protesters deserve the right to defend themselves, others criticized the forceful tone of his message.
As the debate persists online, the episode has intensified discussions concerning public safety, the right to peaceful assembly, and mounting worries about nationwide insecurity.
