Uganda National Team Captain David Owori Killed in Suspected Robbery
Ugandan football is in mourning after the death of SC Villa captain David Owori, who was fatally assaulted during a suspected robbery attempt near his home in Kampala’s Makindye district on Tuesday night.
Police said Owori resisted attackers who tried to steal his mobile phone and other belongings. He was struck with paving stones, left unconscious, and later died in a private hospital on Wednesday, August 5, at the age of 27.
Tributes have flooded in from SC Villa, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, and the national team, the Cranes. They described him as a leader, brother, and inspiration both on and off the pitch.
Parliament observed a minute’s silence in his honour and urged authorities to expedite the investigation. SC Villa also confirmed that Owori had recently signed a contract extension through January 2027 after helping the club secure its first league title in two decades in 2024.
The tragedy comes only weeks after the death of Ugandan rugby international Sydney Gongodyo, who was also killed in a violent attack in Kampala, highlighting growing concerns over rising violent crime in the capital.
