Bode George Says He May Abstain in 2027 Election if PDP Candidate Barred from Ballot
A senior figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has warned that he may refuse to vote in the 2027 presidential election if the party’s preferred candidate is prevented from appearing on the ballot.
He said the leadership crisis within the PDP remains unresolved, even after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published the list of presidential aspirants.
Speaking on TVC’s Beyond the Headlines, George stressed that only a final judgment by the Supreme Court can determine the authentic leadership of the party and its legitimate presidential candidate.
George argued that INEC’s publication of candidates does not settle the legal dispute between rival PDP factions, which is still before the courts.
He maintained that the party must be allowed to present the candidate recognised by its true leadership once the judicial process has been exhausted.
When asked whether he would support President Bola Tinubu if the PDP failed to secure its preferred candidate, George ruled out voting for another political party.
“If they don’t allow my party, I probably will stay in my house,” he said, adding that he would rather remain at home than participate in an election where the PDP allegedly lacks a fair opportunity.
He pictured himself staying home with coffee and tea, relaxing instead of going to the polls.
The former PDP Deputy National Chairman also urged President Tinubu to ensure that all eligible candidates are allowed to contest freely.
George noted that Tinubu already enjoys the advantages of incumbency and does not need allies who intimidate or attack opponents.
He advised the President to distance himself from what he described as “attack dogs” and let the electoral process proceed without interference.
George concluded that a transparent and competitive election would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and improve public confidence in the country’s electoral institutions.
