Former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Tonye Cole has urged Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to concentrate on governing the state and refrain from engaging in further political confrontations.
Cole’s View on the Controversial Emergence of Governor Fubara
Cole described Fubara’s rise to office as contentious from the outset, noting that the ensuing political clash with his predecessor, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, has created serious obstacles for effective governance in Rivers State.
He said he believed the governor would have consulted his close allies before settling on the current political direction, although he admitted he was not part of those discussions and could not confirm the exact considerations that shaped Fubara’s decisions.
Avoiding Renewed Political Battles
According to Cole, having chosen to return to office and complete his term, Governor Fubara must now prioritize governance and steer clear of returning to political fights. He argued that walking away after the battle would have been inconsistent with his decision to resume the governorship.
“Having taken the responsibility to come and finish his term, then he has to finish it in a way that allows him to govern. He can’t go back into fighting,” Cole stated.
Opportunity for a New Governance Model
The APC chieftain expressed hope that the current political situation could serve as a turning point for Rivers State, offering residents a chance to demand a different political process and elect leaders capable of delivering good governance.
Cole called on the people of Rivers State to seize this opportunity to establish a new direction in governance and improve the process through which political leaders are chosen.
“We have an opportunity in Rivers State to set a different type of governance, a different type of process in electing those who represent us in power. My prayer is that we do it right,” he added.
