Tonye Cole Calls for Peaceful Governance in Rivers State
Former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State, Tonye Cole, described the emergence of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as contentious from the outset. He noted that the ensuing political crisis, particularly the face‑off with predecessor Nyesom Wike, created serious obstacles to effective governance.
Assumed Consultation with Allies
Cole said he believed Fubara would have consulted his close allies before deciding on his current political direction. “My assumption is that the governor would have gone with his own close allies, discussed with them, and said that this is the best way forward for the next six months or so of his administration,” Cole remarked.
He admitted he was not part of those discussions and could not state exactly what informed the governor’s decision, but maintained that such consultation would have been the logical step.
Avoid Returning to Political Battles
Cole argued that, having chosen to return to office and complete his tenure, Fubara must now prioritize governance and steer clear of further political battles. “But having taken the responsibility to come and finish his term, then he has to finish it in a way that allows him to govern. He can’t go back into fighting,” he said.
Impact of the Prolonged Disagreement
The controversy surrounding Fubara’s administration began with the manner in which he emerged as governor and continued throughout his conflict with Wike. Cole contended that the prolonged disagreement negatively affected Rivers State, contrary to the people’s desire for better governance and a different leadership approach.
“So that could not have been the wishes of the people. People looked for something different; they didn’t get it,” he added.
Opportunity for a New Political Direction
Despite the challenges, Cole expressed hope that the current situation offers Rivers State a chance to establish a new system of governance. He urged residents to demand a different political process and elect leaders capable of delivering good governance.
