Nigerian media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has opened up about a past relationship in which she used her university semester’s school fees to celebrate her boyfriend’s birthday.
She explained that after dating a man who was ten years her senior, she decided to stop buying gifts for men altogether. “I spent my university semester’s school fees to celebrate his birthday and took him to an Italian restaurant in Victoria Island,” she said. “He ordered everything on the menu. When we got home…there was another woman in his house. That broke me.”
In a recent episode of the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Toke Makinwa spoke about financial disparity in relationships. She stressed that dating someone above one’s financial class can lead to problems, especially for men who have not yet achieved financial stability.
She added that many men leave partners who earn similar incomes to pursue women they perceive as being of a higher financial status, only to later complain that women are materialistic. According to her, staying within one’s financial bracket promotes healthier, more balanced relationships.
