Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has revealed that an injury sustained before the 2026 Commonwealth Games prevented her from defending her women’s 100m hurdles title in Glasgow.
Race Result and Medal Standing
The world record holder crossed the finish line in 12.60 seconds, securing the bronze medal. Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton claimed gold in 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Simmons took silver with a time of 12.41 seconds.
Amusan’s Injury and Training Setback
Speaking after the race, Amusan disclosed that she suffered a heavy fall during training camp, which left her concerned about her knee heading into the competition.
“I had a pretty bad fall at training camp, so I’ve been a bit concerned about my knee coming into this meet. But I’m just thankful I was able to hold it together and get on the podium once again,” she said.
Weather Challenges in Glasgow
The Nigerian athlete also noted that the cold conditions in Glasgow posed an additional obstacle, especially given her anaemia.
“It was a little cold out there. I’m anaemic, so I try to stay warm whenever I can. I did my best to keep myself warm before the race,” Amusan added.
Looking Ahead
Amusan emphasized her focus on recovery, stating that she plans to seek treatment and assess her future steps.
“The last time I felt something, I just focused on preparing for the race instead of trying to make excuses. Honestly, with what I’m dealing with right now, I just want to go and get treatment, and then we’ll see what happens next.”
Nigeria’s Medal Tally at the Games
Amusan’s bronze contributed to Nigeria’s growing medal haul. As of the latest standings, Team Nigeria sits fifth on the medals table with eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals, for a total of 16 medals.
Australia leads with 112 medals (51 gold, 24 silver, 37 bronze), followed by England (66 medals), Canada (46), and host Scotland (26). South Africa, Malaysia and New Zealand round out the top eight.
