Tobi Amusan Confirms Injury Cost Her Commonwealth Games 2026 100m Hurdles Title
Nigeria’s world‑record holder Tobi Amusan has disclosed that she suffered an injury before the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which prevented her from defending her women’s 100m hurdles title in Glasgow. She finished the final in 12.60 seconds, earning a bronze medal behind Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton (gold, 12.33 s) and Jamaica’s Megan Simmons (silver, 12.41 s).
Speaking after the race, Amusan said she experienced a heavy fall during training camp, leaving her worried about the condition of her knee heading into the competition. “I had a pretty bad fall at training camp, so I’ve been a bit concerned about my knee coming into this meet. But I’m just thankful I was able to hold it together and get on the podium once again,” she explained.
The athlete also noted that the chilly conditions in Glasgow added another layer of difficulty. As someone who is anemic, she makes a point of staying warm whenever possible. “It was a little cold out there. I’m anemic, so I try to stay warm every opportunity I get. I did my best to make sure I kept myself warm before the race,” Amusan added.
Looking ahead, Amusan said her priority is to seek treatment for the injury and then assess her next steps. Her bronze contributed to Nigeria’s growing medal haul at the Games; the team currently sits in fifth place with eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals (16 total). Australia leads the standings with 112 medals, followed by England (66), Canada (46), host Scotland (26), and then South Africa, Malaysia and New Zealand rounding out the top eight.
