Sultan of Sokoto Denies Endorsing Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has refuted claims circulating on social media that he urged Nigerians to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued by his media team, the Sultan described the reports as a malicious attempt to involve the traditional institution in partisan politics.
“It is impossible for the Sultan, as a father figure to all Nigerians, to make such a declaration, whether publicly or in any other setting,” the statement noted.
It emphasized that the monarchy and religious leadership headed by the Sultan serve as unifying institutions, and His Eminence remains committed to offering spiritual blessings and guidance to politicians of all affiliations who seek his counsel.
“His doors remain open to every Nigerian, irrespective of political leaning. He continues to relate with all citizens without discrimination, embodying the role of a father to the nation,” the release added.
The media team urged the public to dismiss any effort to misrepresent the Sultan’s stance or link him to any political campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.
It reaffirmed his dedication to fostering peace, unity, stability and harmonious coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious groups.
The statement also appealed to journalists and social media users to verify information before sharing, warning that unverified reports could mislead the public and drag traditional institutions into political controversies.
