Former Big Brother Naija contestant Seyi Awolowo has opened up about his attempt to conceal his famous family background when he auditioned for the 2019 edition of the reality show. He wanted to be evaluated solely on his personality and abilities, not on the weight of the Awolowo surname.
As the grandson of the late nationalist and statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Seyi hoped to enter the house without fellow housemates knowing his lineage. His strategy was simple: appear as just “Seyi” and let his performance speak for itself.
The Moment Ebuka Revealed His Identity
That plan collapsed during the live stage introduction. Host Ebobi‑Uchendu called out Seyi’s full name — “Seyi Awolowo” — before he stepped into the house. The announcement instantly informed every contestant of his family connection.
Seyi recalled wishing he would be introduced merely by his first name. The moment his surname was spoken, his original intention vanished.
“I didn’t want anybody to know I was an Awolowo in the house. I didn’t want the housemates in particular to know that’s who I was, but when I got to the stage and Ebuka called ‘Seyi Awolowo,’ that’s when everyone knew.

He added that carrying the Awolowo name could have created expectations he preferred to avoid while competing.
Audition Details and Personal Reflections
Seyi also shared details about the audition process. He said he waited in line and only received his golden ticket around 3 a.m. on February 3, 2019. He attended the audition with a friend, and one of his stepbrothers showed up later.
Despite the unintended reveal, Seyi’s time in the BBNaija house remains a notable chapter in his life, illustrating the challenges of balancing personal privacy with public fame.
