Rodri Gives Barcelona the Green Light
Barcelona have taken a major step toward signing Manchester City’s star midfielder Rodri after the Spain international reportedly informed the club that he is ready to start negotiations. Reports from Mundo Deportivo, Sport and Marca, backed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, indicate that Rodri has given his approval for talks with the Catalan giants.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Rodri told Barcelona’s sporting department that he is fully convinced by Hansi Flick’s project and has authorised the club to open discussions with Manchester City. Although no formal agreement has been reached with either the player or the English champions, Barcelona view Rodri’s willingness as the biggest obstacle overcome in the pursuit.
The situation marks a dramatic shift from earlier expectations. Just days ago, Barcelona officials believed Rodri’s preferred destination in Spain was Real Madrid. Now, the midfielder has redirected his focus entirely to the Camp Nou side.
While Barcelona’s primary summer target remains strengthening the attack, the chance to add one of the world’s best midfielders has prompted the board to seriously consider the deal. Real Madrid had previously valued a potential transfer at around €60 million, a figure that would test Barcelona’s financial limits. Nevertheless, the club is now exploring possible financial solutions after receiving Rodri’s go‑ahead.
Sport reported that Rodri’s representatives informed Barcelona on Wednesday evening that negotiations with Real Madrid had collapsed over financial terms. The outlet added that Barcelona first approached the player’s camp following Frenkie de Jong’s injury but waited until they were certain of Rodri’s genuine interest before proceeding.
That assurance has now arrived, with the Spain international making it clear he is ready to negotiate. Sport estimates the transfer could cost between €55 million and €70 million, with Manchester City leaning toward the higher end of the range, though room for negotiation exists if Rodri pushes for an exit.
Rodri’s wages are also expected to be a significant hurdle. Following his Ballon d’Or triumph, the midfielder seeks a contract that reflects his elite status, meaning Barcelona must find space within their salary limits. Discussions with his representatives are already underway, and optimism is growing inside the club despite the absence of an official bid to either Rodri or Manchester City.
Marca also noted that Rodri has communicated his willingness to join Flick’s project to Barcelona’s sporting department, effectively ending any realistic chance of a move to Real Madrid.
