Opposition Disunity Could Hand Tinubu 2027 Victory, Warns ADC Leader
A senior member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Salihu Moh Lukman, has warned that ongoing divisions and personal ambitions among opposition leaders could pave the way for President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to win the 2027 general election.
In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, Lukman expressed concern that, despite widespread dissatisfaction with the APC‑led administration, opposition parties appear to be repeating the strategic errors that weakened them in past elections.
The former APC National Vice Chairman (North‑West) singled out former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, ex‑Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as prominent opposition figures whose individual presidential aspirations could fragment the effort to unseat the ruling party.
“Lack of unity among the opposition was largely responsible for the APC’s electoral victory. The same pattern is emerging again, with the same two leading opposition personalities positioning themselves as challengers to President Tinubu,” Lukman said.
He questioned why, if the goal truly is to defeat APC and Tinubu, the leaders cannot see that division effectively concedes victory to the incumbent.
Lukman argued that many Nigerians are growing disillusioned with opposition politicians who prioritise personal ambition over building a credible alternative. He noted that, beyond superficial differences and the personalities of the candidates, there is little distinguishing the contenders.
While acknowledging the nation’s economic challenges, he maintained that the opposition has yet to present a convincing platform capable of inspiring public confidence. Defeating the APC, he added, will require a disciplined, united front that places collective interest above individual ambitions.
“With each day of inaction and the repetition of old tactics, the 2027 election is beginning to look like a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea for Nigerians,” he concluded.
