A senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has disclosed that several prominent Northern Nigerian figures who once opposed Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential ambition have changed their outlook ahead of the 2027 election.
Ulasi explained that these leaders reassessed the national situation and concluded that, provided an election takes place, Obi stands a strong chance of winning.
Shifting Alliances in the North
According to Ulasi, the same top Northern leaders who told him in 2023 that Obi would not succeed and advised him to abandon the idea are now reaching out to say that, barring a total cancellation of the polls, Obi will emerge victorious.
He noted that political support in the North operates differently from other regions, where traditional and community leaders wield considerable sway over public opinion.
The North possesses a robust grassroots network, and pronouncements from influential figures can directly shape how communities cast their votes during elections.
Ulasi quoted the leaders as saying, “The Emir has spoken,” underscoring the weight of traditional authority in mobilising voters—a dynamic less prevalent in other parts of the country.
This change in sentiment suggests a potential realignment of political forces as the country approaches the 2027 general election.
