Nollywood Actors Who Switched Acting for US Military Service
Over the years, Nollywood has produced many talented actors and actresses who have built reputable careers on screen. While most remain in the entertainment world, a small number have chosen a dramatically different route by enlisting in the United States military after moving abroad.
Joseph Momodu – US Army
Joseph Momodu, originally named Abubakar Sadiq Momodu, recently became one of the latest Nollywood actors to join the US Army after finishing Basic Combat Training in April 2026. Before his enlistment, he appeared in films such as Coming to Nigeria, Play 2 Kill and A Fool for Trust, and featured in television series including Tinsel, Soul Sisters and The Johnsons. Momodu explained that his decision was influenced by the legacy of his late father, who served in the Nigerian Police Force.
Princess Chineke – US Army
Actress Princess Chineke enlisted in the US Army in December 2024 after relocating to the United States. She was known for her performances in movies like To Love a Sister, Stormy Hearts and Masters at War. She announced her decision on social media, stating that she had answered the call to serve the United States.
Mayowa Dosu – US Army
Actress and producer Mayowa Dosu also pursued a military career after moving to the US. She revealed her enlistment around the same time as Princess Chineke, marking a significant shift from her acting background. Prior to joining the Army, she appeared in productions such as Fears, Mamami and Compromise.
Grace‑Charis Bassey (formerly Belinda Effah) – US Navy
Former Nollywood star Grace‑Charis Bassey, previously credited as Belinda Effah, joined the US Navy in May 2025. After completing boot camp, she acquired US citizenship. The award‑winning actress dedicated her achievement to her late father, who had served as a naval commander. Before leaving Nollywood, she earned the Africa Movie Academy Award for Most Promising Act of the Year.
The choices made by these entertainers highlight a growing trend among Nigerians living in the United States who are exploring military service as a fresh career path, while also gaining opportunities for personal and professional development.
