Allegations of Unnecessary Medical Tests by Nigerian Doctors
A Nigerian woman has publicly accused certain physicians in the country of prescribing unnecessary laboratory examinations solely to boost hospital income.
In a widely circulated clip on X (formerly Twitter), she argued that while some diagnostic procedures are essential for accurate assessment, others are reportedly recommended even when they are not clinically required.
She stated, “Nigerian doctors, you should cease misdiagnosing patients and making them spend money they don’t need to spend merely to increase revenue for the facility or yourselves. I am not referring to doctors who genuinely require tests to identify illnesses. I am talking about those who deliberately send individuals to the lab for tests they do not need.”
The woman recounted an incident where a physician ordered four costly tests after she complained of chest pain, warning her that her heart might be problematic.
After obtaining a second opinion from a consultant at the same hospital, she learned that the tests were not needed; only a malaria screening was advised following a review of her medical background.
She added, “The initial physician never examined my history. The consultant reviewed my file and attributed the chest pain to involuntary muscle spasms resulting from my active routine. Two other doctors later confirmed that those expensive tests were unnecessary. On the same day, that same physician prescribed the identical four tests to another patient, revealing a clear motive. Divine judgment awaits those who intentionally direct patients toward unwarranted examinations.”
Her comments have ignited online discussion, with numerous Nigerians recounting comparable experiences and many advising patients to pursue second opinions before agreeing to expensive medical procedures.
