Mikel Obi Claims Vinícius Jr Is Using Arsenal Interest to Secure Better Real Madrid Deal
Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has dismissed reports linking Brazil winger Vinícius Jr with a move to Arsenal, insisting the player is merely using the Premier League club’s interest to improve his contract situation at Real Madrid.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel said there is “no chance” of Vinícius leaving the Santiago Bernabéu, describing the transfer speculation as a negotiating tactic.
“He’s not coming. Forget about that. He’s just using Arsenal to get a better deal. He’s not leaving Real Madrid,” Mikel stated, adding that he is “one hundred per cent” sure the winger will remain with the Spanish giants.
The former Super Eagles captain acknowledged that a move to north London would be historic, but maintained it remains highly unlikely.
Mikel also downplayed any concerns about Vinícius potentially working with Jose Mourinho, noting that professional players can overcome past disagreements and that Mourinho’s direct style often leads to stronger working relationships.
He concluded that while a transfer to Arsenal would be a record‑breaking deal, he expects Vinícius to stay at Real Madrid, with both parties keen to continue their partnership.
