Nasboi Responds to Pressure on Celebrities to Speak Politically
Nigerian skit maker and singer Nasboi has called out the public for demanding that celebrities comment on national politics.
He pointed to the treatment of his fellow entertainer, Mr Macaroni, who faced harassment, mockery and insults after voicing his views on government affairs.
Nasboi argued that not everyone feels comfortable speaking out publicly, and that such reluctance should be respected.
He reminded fans that, just as many ordinary Nigerians choose to stay away from political discussions, some celebrities also prefer to keep their distance.
“People with sense, let us reason this matter,” Nasboi wrote. “You always drag celebrities for staying silent, but look at what happened to Mr Macaroni. He spoke up for everyone and was maltreated, yet people still mock and insult him. Do you think other celebrities do not see what he went through?”
“Not everybody has the courage to talk. You have to accept that. And remember, just like some of you are not interested in politics, some celebrities feel the same way. Celebrities are human, just like you.”
