A woman shared an emotional account of a Muslim man who shielded her Christian family during a violent outbreak in Kaduna State, endangering himself to keep them safe.
She recalled the incident on social media, noting she was just a child when the deadly unrest erupted in Kaduna.
The rescuer, a respected Hausa Muslim, took her family into his home despite having no prior acquaintance with them.
When armed assailants came searching for Christians, he denied anyone was hiding inside and swore an oath to convince them the house was empty.
Man endangered himself to protect strangers
In her retelling, she explained that the man risked his own life by lying to the attackers and invoking God’s name to assure them no one was concealed in his dwelling.
“During the Kaduna massacre, a Hausa man, a respected Muslim who didn’t know us, kept me and my family hidden in his house. When the murderers came and asked if there were Christians there, he told them no one was there. He even said ‘Wallahi,’ betraying his faith and risking his own life just to keep us safe.”
Lady returns years later to honour the hero
She said the memory stayed with her throughout life, and as an adult she went back to Kaduna to find him, only to learn he had died before her arrival.
The touching narrative has sparked online reactions, with many Nigerians commending the late man’s courage and his transcendence of religious and ethnic divides.
Comparable accounts of Muslims safeguarding Christians and Christians protecting Muslims during communal clashes have surfaced before from Kaduna and Plateau State.
