Newcastle United Confirm Matthias Jaissle as New Head Coach
Newcastle United have officially appointed Matthias Jaissle as the club’s new head coach, succeeding Eddie Howe who departed after five years in charge.
Jaissle expressed his delight at joining the Magpies, calling the opportunity one of the biggest moments of his coaching career.
Jaissle’s Reaction and Ambition
“It is an incredible honour to become head coach of Newcastle United,” he said. “This is one of the biggest clubs in European football, with a unique history, identity and supporter base, and I am excited to experience that passion and connection first‑hand.”
He added that the club’s ambition, vision for the future and the challenge ahead made the move compelling, noting he had followed Newcastle’s progress closely in recent years.
Coaching Background and Achievements
Jaissle began his managerial career with Austrian side Liefering, guiding them to a second‑place finish in the second division, matching the club’s best‑ever league performance.
In 2021 he took over at Red Bull Salzburg, where he won back‑to‑back Austrian Bundesliga titles and lifted the Austrian Cup.
After a spell in Saudi Arabia with Al‑Ahi, he led the team to consecutive AFC Champions League triumphs in 2025 and 2026, further enhancing his reputation.
Challenges Ahead for Newcastle
Jaissle inherits a Newcastle side looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2025/26 campaign that saw the Magpies finish 12th in the Premier League with 17 defeats.
Under Howe, Newcastle returned to the UEFA Champions League in 2023 and again in 2025, and claimed their first major trophy since 1969 by defeating Liverpool in the 2025 League Cup final.
However, the club lost key players over the summer, with Sandro Tonali moving to Tottenham Hotspur and Anthony Gordon joining Barcelona, increasing the rebuilding task for the new head coach.
Jaissle will now be expected to restore Newcastle’s challenge for European qualification and compete for domestic honours.
