Kenneth Okonkwo Expresses Shock Over Governor Otti’s Alleged Role in APC’s ₦200 Million Billboard Fees in Abia
A senior member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of levying prohibitive costs for campaign billboards in Abia State. He made the remarks while appearing on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme.
According to Okonkwo, the APC has set a ₦200 million charge for presidential candidates and a ₦150 million fee for governorship aspirants who wish to erect billboards across the state. He argued that such amounts effectively bar opposition parties from mounting any meaningful visibility during elections.
He warned that if the ₦200 million figure were replicated in all 36 states plus the Federal Capital Territory, the financial burden would become a deliberate strategy to suffocate democratic competition. “It is just an opportunity to advertise and tell Nigerians what you want to do,” Okonkwo said, describing the APC’s approach as a scourge aimed at undermining Nigeria’s democracy.
Expressing his disbelief, Okonkwo stated, “I’m surprised that Governor Otti will fall for that. As far as I’m concerned, that is an APC agenda using Governor Otti to make it impossible for the opposition political parties to campaign, and it’s really unfortunate.” He urged stakeholders to scrutinise the pricing model and called for a level playing field for all political actors.
