Kenneth Okonkwo Accuses APC of Using Governor Otti to Stifle Opposition in Abia
A senior member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) for imposing exorbitant fees on campaign billboards in Abia State. He argues that the ruling party is leveraging Governor Alex Otti to make it virtually impossible for opposition parties to gain visibility during elections.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Okonkwo described the situation as unfortunate, noting that a presidential candidate must pay ₦200 million to erect billboards in Abia alone. When this amount is multiplied across the 36 states plus the Federal Capital Territory, the scale of the alleged manipulation becomes evident.
He further stated that the APC’s actions amount to a deliberate attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democracy. Okonkwo expressed surprise that Governor Otti would accede to such demands, viewing it as an APC strategy to silence rival political groups and suppress democratic competition.
