INEC Portal Error Sparks Dispute Over NDC Edo South Candidate
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has caused confusion after publishing an incorrect photo‑name combination for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate vying for the Edo South senatorial seat in the 2027 general election.
Former Senate Chief Whip Rowland Owie voiced his dissatisfaction in an interview with Punch, stating that Sunny Aguebor emerged as the party’s nominee following a primary election overseen by INEC. He claimed that a national officer of the NDC may be responsible for the erroneous upload.
Owie denounced the incident as fraud, insisting that Aguebor remains the duly nominated candidate and that the party possesses the certified true copy of his nomination from INEC.
He said, “The truth is fraud cannot stand. The duly nominated candidate for Edo South NDC is Sunny Aguebor. His primary election was monitored by the INEC and we have the CTC of his nomination from INEC. The party uploaded the information to the INEC portal. What they were trying to do is to put that lady’s name but they couldn’t remove Aguebor’s picture.”
Owie labelled the act criminal, warning that whoever is behind it should be arrested for forgery, and noted that the party has already written to INEC demanding the necessary corrections.
NDC state chairman David Olukoga echoed the party’s stance, describing the matter as a social‑media issue and affirming that the party is still liaising with INEC. He added, “Those are social media issues; when we are ready we will publish our lists. We are not done with INEC; once we finish, they will give us our list and we will publish them.”
