INEC Awaits ₦873 Billion Budget for 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that it has not yet received the ₦873.78 billion budget allocated for the 2027 general elections.
Despite the pending funds, the commission said preparations for the election are ongoing and remain within the legal timeframe.
Citing the Electoral Act, 2026, INEC noted that election funds must be released no later than six months before the poll, a deadline that has not yet passed.
The commission is already moving to procure new election materials, including Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) units and other machines that were damaged, lost or not recovered during previous elections.
INEC’s director of information and communication technology recently returned from China to finalize the procurement, explaining that not all BVAS devices used in the last election were recovered.
To avoid a repeat of the technical problems that affected the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal during the 2023 presidential election, the commission plans to conduct mock presidential election exercises to test its technology deployment.
The proposed budget earmarks significant amounts for election operations, technology upgrades and capital expenditure.
