A man has shared how an innocent childhood visit to relatives turned into four years of selling pure water on the streets of Ogun State, an experience that profoundly shaped his life.
He explained that the journey started in 2006 when his uncle came to Abuja to take one of his cousins to Lagos.
Not wanting to be separated from his cousin, he pleaded with his mother, who eventually agreed to let him join the trip, with his father’s blessing.
Upon reaching Lagos that evening, they settled into a family compound where two of his uncles resided. Just three days later, he and his cousin were informed they would begin hawking pure water.
An Unexpected Turn: From Family Visit to Water Hawking
He recalled, “This is how I ended up selling pure water for four years in Ogun State. In 2006, my uncle visited us in Abuja to take my stubborn cousin to Lagos. I couldn’t bear the thought of being left behind, so I cried until my mother allowed me to go along, with my father’s permission since he was out of town. We arrived in Lagos at 8:27 PM that year. My uncle was single, but his elder brother—also my uncle—was married and had three children: two boys and a girl. We all lived in the same compound. Three days later, believe it or not, we were told we would start selling pure water. I thought it was a joke, but we began hawking at Agabara bus stop and in Agbara market, among other places.”
Online Reaction: Sympathy and Praise for the Man’s Resilience
The story sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many users expressing sympathy for his difficult childhood while applauding his perseverance.
Others pointed out the broader realities of child street traders, noting that the tale serves as a reminder that tough beginnings do not necessarily dictate a person’s future.
