Governor Seyi Makinde Vows Oyo Will Not Suffer Chibok-Style Abduction
The governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the state will never experience a tragedy akin to the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.
Commitment to Rescue the Abducted
Speaking to demonstrators, Makinde said his administration is fully committed to securing the release of the 46 pupils and teachers abducted in Orire Local Government Area on May 15.
Personal Sacrifice Offered
“Let me make it very, very clear, Oyo State is not Chibok and we will not be Chibok,” Makinde declared.
He added that he would be willing to sacrifice himself if it guaranteed the safe return of the children, noting that he has lived a good life and is almost 60 years old.
Security Losses in the Rescue Effort
The governor disclosed that security operatives have already made sacrifices, including the death of a Nigerian Army lieutenant a few days ago.
A Delicate Rescue Operation
Makinde acknowledged the delicate nature of the mission, stating that authorities are proceeding cautiously to avoid further casualties, but emphasized that if certain individuals—including himself—must be sacrificed to save the children, they will do so.
Support for Protesters’ Rights
He expressed solidarity with the protesters, saying that if he were not in office he would be marching alongside them, and that peaceful protest remains a vital tool for holding leaders accountable.
Constitutional Limits on State Security Powers
While accepting responsibility as governor, Makinde pointed out that the state government does not control all security agencies under the constitution, and he refused to shift blame for the ongoing crisis.
