Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Possible Run Seen as Boost for PDP in 2027 Elections
House of Representatives Minority Leader Fred Agbedi has voiced optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will triumph in the 2027 general elections if former President Goodluck Jonathan appears on the ballot.
Speaking about the party’s preparations, Agbedi noted that Jonathan has neither announced his intention to contest nor ruled out the possibility of running.
Agbedi’s Confidence in PDP’s Strength
He emphasized that the PDP remains strong despite ongoing internal crises. According to Agbedi, “With former President Jonathan on the ballot, PDP will win in 2027. While we can agree that he has not mentioned running in 2027, he has also not ruled out the possibility.”
He added that the decision over which faction — Wike or Turaki — will present the party’s presidential candidate is still pending, but the party is confident the outcome will favor them.
INEC Dismisses Manual Submission Claims by Turaki Faction
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected assertions made by the Kabiru Turaki‑led faction of the PDP that it manually submitted its candidate list for the 2027 elections, including Jonathan as its presidential nominee.
INEC clarified that political parties must upload their candidates through the commission’s designated electronic portal. The commission’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Ita‑Messi, stated that manual submission violates established procedures, although she could not confirm whether the faction had actually submitted any list.
