FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe Alleges Violent Attack by Political Thugs at ADC Primary
Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory, said she was assaulted by political thugs during the African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Assembly primary held in Abuja.
She disclosed the incident in a Facebook post on Sunday, describing it as a premeditated ambush and warning that political thuggery must not be allowed to undermine democracy.
The alleged attack took place on Thursday, 21 May 2026, at the ADC State Secretariat in Gudu, where she had gone to observe the distribution of election materials.
According to Kingibe, the process started peacefully until a man named Tijani Mubarak arrived with several accomplices and began disrupting the proceedings.
When Mubarak identified himself, the committee chairman asked if he was the person who had been calling earlier that day. Mubarak responded with aggression, she said.
The situation escalated when the chairman refused to tolerate the behaviour, leading to a physical confrontation.
Kingibe alleged that Mubarak violently slapped the committee chairman.
She also said a female aspirant who tried to record the incident was attacked by the group and had her phone forcibly taken.
“Infuriated by this, Mubarak ordered his thugs to seize her phone,” Kingibe stated, adding that the woman was shoved in the process.
The senator claimed she was then grabbed by one of Mubarak’s men, flung against a wall, and struck her head with severe force.
She said the attackers locked the office door, trapping those inside before fleeing with the key, preventing escape.
“Realising he was losing control of the room, Mubarak ran to the exit, locked it, and trapped us inside with himself and his armed thugs,” she recalled.
Supporters later forced entry into the building, rescued those trapped after a scuffle outside.
Kingibe said she was taken to hospital afterward, suffering a severe headache and blurred vision; doctors confirmed head trauma.
She reported the matter to the ADC national leadership and filed a formal complaint at the Apo Police Station in Abuja.
The senator called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved, urging security agencies to investigate what she described as a coordinated attack.
“I call upon the Inspector General of Police and the FCT Police Commissioner to immediately order the arrest, thorough investigation, and swift prosecution,” she said.
