Edo LG Election Marked by Low Turnout and Delayed Materials
Today’s local government election in Edo State recorded a thin voter turnout across many polling units, according to journalists monitoring the exercise.
At Agbado Primary School in Oredo Ward 4, which housed Polling Units 21 to 41, electoral materials arrived on schedule and officials were ready to commence voting. Despite the prompt start, only a handful of voters appeared at the centre, leaving the environment unusually quiet. Those who cast their ballots were processed quickly and departed shortly after voting.
The situation contrasted sharply in parts of Egor Local Government Area, where several polling units experienced delays in the delivery of electoral materials. As of 9 a.m., voters who had arrived early at Polling Units 9, 10, 11 and 12 in Ward 10, located within Ugbowo Primary School, were still waiting for officials and voting supplies. Some remained at the site hoping accreditation and voting would begin soon.
Conversely, voting got underway early at Polling Units 1 to 10 in Ward 8, situated at Uselu Secondary School. Although the process started without delay, the number of participants at this location remained relatively low.
Speaking at Oredo Ward 12, Polling Unit 21, voter Austin Obasogie described the exercise as peaceful and expressed hope that more residents would turn out later. “As you can see, people are still coming to vote. I am here to vote for the All Progressives Congress, and I have cast my vote,” he said.
Mrs Blessing Odion, who voted at Polling Units 1 to 6 in Ward 12 of Oredo LGA, noted that the voting was seamless. She acknowledged the low turnout but suggested many residents might be using a walk‑in pattern—arriving, voting, and leaving immediately. Odion added that electoral materials arrived early at her centre, enabling officials to begin without major delay.
Moses Osadolor, a voter at Polling Unit 5, pointed out that voting commenced early there because the unit serves as the local government distribution centre for electoral materials. He confirmed low turnout, noting that some residents had already voted and left the premises, while others had come and gone back.
Overall, the election remained peaceful at the locations visited, with no major security incidents reported. However, the combination of thin voter presence and delayed arrival of electoral officials and materials in certain parts of Egor stood out as the primary observations of the day.
