Renowned media figure Daddy Freeze has entered the discussion on the so‑called “Peller culture,” insisting that the creator Peller bears no responsibility for Nigeria’s slipping academic standards.
The remarks follow criticism from rapper Ycee, who labelled the phenomenon “Peller culture,” saying the nation now prizes online virality above learning and scholarly accomplishment, terming the shift an “Olodo Uprising.”
Responding to the backlash, Daddy Freeze maintained that Peller simply exploited an already flawed system and should not be blamed for the dwindling esteem Nigerians place on education.
He stated, “Yes, an Olodo culture exists in Nigeria, yet it is unjust to blame Peller—a bright young man who merely leveraged a broken system; he did not create the flaws.”
He explained that Nigeria’s inadequate reward structure discourages academic pursuit, pointing out that even top‑tier professionals receive pay that fails to match their skill level.
He gave the case of a paediatric cardiology professor who, despite instructing child heart surgery, reportedly takes home under ₦700,000 each month.
Daddy Freeze added that obtaining a degree no longer secures a middle‑class comfort in Nigeria, fueling rising apathy toward scholarly pursuits.
He further criticised national priorities, noting that the ₦100 million award for winning Big Brother Naija dwarfs the modest honors bestowed upon top graduates.
He posed the question, “Would you rather strive to be the top graduate or chase a Big Brother Naija victory?”
His comments have ignited online debate, with numerous Nigerians questioning whether the fault lies in the nation’s reward mechanisms instead of influencers like Peller.
