Chelsea Opens Talks with Brighton for Danny Welbeck Transfer

Chelsea have intensified their search for an experienced striker by initiating discussions with Brighton regarding a potential move for Danny Welbeck.

The 35‑year‑old forward is reportedly keen to join Stamford Bridge, and the Blues are optimistic that an agreement can be reached before the current transfer window shuts.

Welbeck has become a primary target as Chelsea look to shift a recruitment policy that has favoured younger talents in recent seasons. Co‑owner Behdad Eghbali admitted in April that the club’s transfer approach needed a “tweak”, opening the door for a seasoned Premier League marksman.

The former England international enjoyed one of his best campaigns last season, netting 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances for Brighton. Since his arrival from Watford in 2020, Welbeck has scored 51 goals in 201 outings for the Seagulls.

Brighton have not commented on the ongoing talks.

Welbeck only agreed to a one‑year contract extension in March, which keeps him tied to Brighton until the end of the 2026‑27 season.

Chelsea’s interest arises amid uncertainty surrounding several of their existing forwards. While Joao Pedro remains the preferred attacking option, the futures of Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson are all under review.

Guiu could leave on a permanent deal or loan, with Chelsea valuing the Spanish striker at roughly £25 million. Jackson, having returned from a loan at Bayern Munich, is now open to an exit, with Aston Villa monitoring his situation.

Delap, who arrived from Ipswich for £30 million last summer, struggled to cement a place under new manager Xabi Alonso and is expected to depart. Meanwhile, questions linger over Emegha’s future despite his recent move from Strasbourg, another club within Chelsea’s ownership group.

This summer, Chelsea have already been active in the market, completing the club‑record £117 million acquisition of Morgan Rogers, signing full‑back Marco Palestra and nearing a deal for centre‑back Maxence Lacroix.
