Arthur Okonkwo Gets First Super Eagles Call-Up
EFL Championship side Wrexham has congratulated goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo. His maiden call-up to the Super Eagles is for the upcoming Unity Cup.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had not yet released the official squad. But Wrexham quickly celebrated the news on social media. They wrote: “Congratulations to Arthur Okonkwo on receiving his first call-up to the Nigeria squad ahead of the Unity Cup.”
The 24-year-old goalkeeper previously represented England at youth level. He recently completed his switch of international allegiance. Okonkwo, a former Arsenal and Sturm Graz player, may make his debut on Tuesday, 26 May. Nigeria will face Zimbabwe in the semi-final at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic.
The other semi-final pits India against Jamaica on Wednesday. The final is scheduled for Saturday, 30 May at the same venue.
Speaking to the national team media unit, Okonkwo described the call-up as a career milestone. He noted that the process started last summer.
“It is a privilege to be granted the chance to play for your country. I am extremely excited and eagerly await the opportunity,” he said.
“I have been looking forward to this moment for quite some time, and to finally have the chance is remarkable.
“The process began last summer when I spoke with the manager and the goalkeeping coach. They expressed their interest in me, and the discussions were very encouraging. Since then, we have been working to finalise my switch from England to Nigeria.”
