Wike Says Atiku’s 2027 Presidency Bid Unlikely with Amaechi as Running Mate
Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has warned that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will struggle to win the 2027 presidential election if he picks Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate.
Speaking on the matter, Wike argued that Amaechi cannot meaningfully boost Atiku’s political prospects and suggested the former transportation minister was chosen more for financial reasons than electoral strength.
He pointed out that Amaechi has not secured any electoral victory since 2011, despite serving as a state governor and federal minister, and lacks a loyal following capable of influencing votes.
Wike also criticised Amaechi for initially rejecting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) primaries that produced Atiku as the party’s presidential candidate, only to later accept the vice‑presidential slot.
“Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate makes a presidential victory difficult for the former vice president. The only plausible motive for the selection appears to be financial; in terms of delivering votes, the partnership is dead on arrival,” Wike stated.
