Wayne Rooney Criticises England’s Collapse After Leading Argentina in World Cup Semi-Final
Wayne Rooney says England’s World Cup hopes faded after they failed to control the match once they took the lead against Argentina in the 2-1 semi‑final loss.
Thomas Tuchel’s side appeared headed for the final after Anthony Gordon converted Morgan Rogers’ cross in the 55th minute, but England gradually lost possession and allowed Argentina to rally with two late goals to reach the final.
Speaking after the game, Rooney said the team did not know how to protect the advantage, sitting back and inviting pressure, which eventually led to a collapse.
The loss ends England’s quest for a first World Cup final since 1966 and caps a promising run that included victories over Mexico and Norway.
Argentina will meet Spain in the final, while England will play France in the third‑place match scheduled for 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 18.
