Wayne Rooney Backs Chelsea to Bounce Back Under New Boss Xabi Alonso
Former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has expressed confidence that Chelsea can rebound strongly next season under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Xabi Alonso, despite finishing the campaign in 10th place and missing out on European football.
A Disappointing Season Ends
The Blues concluded a lacklustre 2023‑24 season with a 2‑1 defeat to Sunderland on the final day, leaving them without a spot in either the Europa League or the Conference League. The campaign also saw significant off‑field changes, with Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior departing before the club turned to Alonso as their new manager.
Rooney’s Podcast Insights
Appearing on the Wayne Rooney Podcast, Rooney highlighted that the absence of mid‑week European fixtures could actually work in Alonso’s favour during his first year at Stamford Bridge.
“I think they’ll be a real threat next season,” Rooney said. “Having just one game a week gives Alonso the time to settle in, convey his philosophy, and get the players on board.”
Training Ground Advantage
Rooney also pointed out that while rivals juggle congested schedules due to European commitments and the upcoming World Cup, Chelsea will enjoy extra training days. He suggested this could translate to an additional three days per week on the pitch, allowing Alonso to refine tactics and build team cohesion.
Historical Precedent for a Turnaround
Drawing on recent history, Rooney noted that Chelsea previously recovered from a 10th‑place finish to clinch the Premier League title in the 2016‑17 season. He believes a similar resurgence is possible under Alonso’s leadership.
