A former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has secured the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The primary election was conducted by the state governorship primary committee, which was chaired by Honourable Austin Nwachukwu.
Acceptance Speech and Promises
In his acceptance speech, Nnaji thanked party members for entrusting him with the mandate and assured them he would not take it for granted. He pledged that his administration would address the suffering of residents by reviewing what he described as excessive taxation in the state.
Nnaji stated, “I dedicate this victory to the glory of God and to the people of Enugu, who have endured oppression over the last three years, burdened by excessive and unjust taxes. Landlords are financially strained, hoteliers are struggling, commercial motorcyclists are nearly extinct, and even water vendors are taxed. These are the very people the government should be supporting financially.”
Vision for Enugu State
Nnaji explained that his ambition to become governor was driven by a desire to recover, rebuild, and industrialise Enugu State. He added, “That is the core of this struggle — to recover Enugu State, rebuild it, and industrialise it to tackle youth restiveness. We will establish industries to create jobs. Jim Nwobodo was the only governor in this state who built industries, but those industries are now being misappropriated by the current administration. That will not continue in Enugu State.”
One-Term Pledge and Party Support
The former minister reiterated his commitment to improving the living conditions of residents within four years and pledged to serve only one term if elected.
Earlier, committee chairman Austin Nwachukwu commended party members for maintaining orderly conduct before, during, and after the primary. He noted that the outcome demonstrated the PDP’s strength and readiness to win the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State.
