England have called up defender Trevoh Chalobah to join the 26‑man World Cup squad after Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento withdrew with a calf injury.
Late Squad Change Confirmed by the FA
The Football Association announced the change on June 16, confirming that Livramento suffered the injury during training on Sunday. FIFA rules permit an outfield player to be replaced up to 24 hours before a team’s first match, allowing Chalobah to travel to the squad’s base in Kansas City while the rest of the team heads to Dallas for the opener.
Livramento’s Injury Details
A subsequent scan and medical assessment on Monday ruled out any further participation for Livramento in the tournament. The defender has a history of injury setbacks, including a lengthy ACL layoff in the 2021‑22 season that kept him sidelined for 354 days, as well as recurring knee, ankle, hamstring and thigh problems.
Social Media Reaction to Chalobah’s Call‑Up
The call‑up revived an old post from Chalobah dating back to July 2018, in which he pictured the World Cup trophy with the caption “One day 🙏 #Believe”. The image has been circulating widely on 𝕏, drawing both celebration for the defender’s milestone and sympathy for Livramento’s unfortunate withdrawal.
England’s Opening Match Against Croatia
England face Croatia at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, in their opening group‑stage fixture. Chalobah is expected to link up with the squad in Kansas City before joining preparations for the remainder of the tournament.
