Tottenham Hotspur Secures £85m Deal for Portugal Midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham
Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Portugal international Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a club‑record £85million transaction. The 21‑year‑old midfielder has agreed to a six‑year contract, becoming one of the Lilywhites’ most significant summer additions as head coach Roberto De Zerbi continues to rebuild the squad for the upcoming season.
Player’s Reaction
Speaking after the move was confirmed, Fernandes expressed his excitement about joining a historic club and working under De Zerbi.
“I’m very excited for this next step. Spurs is a massive club and the head coach was a key part of why I decided to join,” he said. “When we spoke, it felt special. We see football the same way – stepping onto the pitch as a united team with fight and energy, aiming to win every game. I can’t wait to meet the fans, get started, and give everything for the club.”
Club Officials’ Comments
Sporting director Johan Lange welcomed the arrival, describing Fernandes as one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
“I’m delighted to welcome Mateus to the club,” Lange stated. “He possesses outstanding technical ability, intelligence and maturity. Despite his youth, he has already performed consistently in high‑pressure environments. We believe this is the ideal setting for him to take the next step in his career, working with our top‑class coaching staff alongside an ambitious and talented group of players.”
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi also praised the midfielder, having monitored his progress for some time.
“I have admired Mateus for a long time because he blends quality on the ball with the intensity and intelligence that match our style of play,” De Zerbi said. “Even at his age, he brings solid Premier League experience and has shown consistency at this level. He remains composed under pressure, can advance the ball, works hard for the team and isn’t afraid to make things happen in tough moments.”
Career Background
Fernandes is a product of Sporting CP’s academy. He made his breakthrough in Portugal before a successful loan spell at Estoril paved the way for a move to Southampton. After an impressive debut campaign with the Saints, he was named their Player of the Season and transferred to West Ham in August 2025.
At West Ham, Fernandes featured in every Premier League match, ranking among the league’s leading tacklers while contributing three goals and four assists. His spectacular long‑range strike against Sunderland earned him the club’s Goal of the Season award. He has also represented Portugal at every youth level and made his senior debut in April 2026, coming off the bench in a 2‑0 victory over the United States.
