The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has warned President Bola Tinubu against any action that could shrink Nigeria’s democratic space.
Protecting Democratic Gains
Dickson stressed that safeguarding democracy requires upholding the constitution, guaranteeing judicial independence, preserving a free press, and ensuring an electoral body that is truly independent and enjoys public trust.
He warned that when constitutional institutions are undermined, there is little difference between a civilian dictator and a military ruler.
Democracy Is a Marathon
Quoting his marathon analogy, Dickson said democracy is not a sprint but a long journey with twists and turns, and what matters is a steadfast commitment to democratic governance, the rule of law, and independent institutions.
Regional Leadership at Risk
He expressed concern that democratic values are under pressure across Africa, especially within ECOWAS, and blamed the APC government’s dysfunctional foreign policy for weakening the bloc and enabling breakaway groups such as the Alliance of Sahel States.
Call for Non‑Partisan Governance
Dickson urged President Tinubu to ensure state institutions are not used for partisan interests, warning that governments perceived as oppressive or operating above the constitution inevitably lose public confidence and legitimacy.
