Senegal Coach Thiaw Moves On From AFCON Controversy, Focuses on France World Cup Opener
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw said his side has put the AFCON final fallout behind them and is fully focused on Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup opener against France at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
He dismissed any notion that the lingering dispute over the stripped continental title could distract his players, stating the AFCON chapter is closed and the team is ready for the World Cup challenge.
Thiaw recalled the 2002 World Cup upset where Senegal defeated France 1-0, noting he was part of the squad although he did not play. He believes another victory over the French side would not be surprising given their African champions status and third consecutive World Cup appearance.
The Lions of Teranga will also benefit from the return of captain Sadio Mane, who missed the 2022 tournament through injury, and the availability of Kalidou Koulibaly after recovering from a back issue.
Despite the ongoing Court of Arbitration for Sport appeal regarding the AFCON title, Thiaw insists all attention is now on the task of competing against a star‑laden French side.
