Protesters Occupy Abuja Court Premises
Nigerian youths have taken over the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja, calling for the immediate release of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. The demonstrators filled the court’s entrance, chanting slogans and demanding justice.
The court had previously ordered Sowore’s remand to the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja. Today, June 30, 2026, was fixed for a ruling on his application seeking the restoration of bail and the cancellation of a bench warrant issued against him.
Justice Mohammed Umar presided over the hearing and, after both sides presented their processes, adjourned the matter. Outside the courtroom, protesters were heard singing, “Free Sowore now. We want a better Nigeria.”
Addressing the security officers stationed at the court gates, the demonstrators urged them to be good citizens and to support the vision of a Nigeria where future generations can thrive.
In a related development, the court granted Sowore bail in the amount of ₦200 million, requiring two sureties of equal value. One surety must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the other must own property located in Abuja. Additionally, Sowore is to deposit his travel documents with the deputy registrar of the court.
