Presidency Blasts Peter Obi Over Unity Plan Claims
President Bola Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Engagement, Fredrick Nwabufo, has dismissed the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi’s recent remarks on national unity. In a signed statement, Nwabufo said Obi lacks a genuine grasp of governance and dismissed his comments as a “mouthful of sentimental nothings.”
Nwabufo argued that Obi’s interview revealed a vacancy of deep thought and an overreliance on syrupy rhetoric, insisting that the former Anambra governor has presented no concrete plan, alternative, or policy framework for Nigeria. He specifically criticised Obi’s claim that he would unite the country, noting that the candidate failed to explain how beyond pointing to his northern‑born cooks and aide‑de‑camp.
The aide further asserted that such statements and the actions of Obi’s supporters have only widened the nation’s divisions. He outlined that true national cohesion rests on inclusive governance, economic integration, and equitable citizenship — factors that cannot be separated from effective leadership and the tangible benefits of good governance. According to Nwabufo, strengthening unity means ensuring public resources reach every citizen irrespective of faith, ethnicity, or social status, and that the government acts fairly and justly for all.
He pointed to the Tinubu administration’s record, stating that it has applied these principles by giving the six geopolitical zones equal access to federal programmes, initiatives, and projects. Nwabufo highlighted the President’s appointment of young professionals from diverse backgrounds to strategic government roles at an unprecedented scale, noting that this marks the first time youths are overseeing key sectors in Nigeria’s evolution.
