Political Analyst Udenta Claims National Assembly Was Procured to Reinstate Tinubu
Professor Udenta Udenta, a political analyst and the founding National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), has alleged that the National Assembly was procured to amend the Electoral Act in order to favour President Bola Tinubu’s return to power.
Speaking on the state of democracy under the current administration, Udenta accused the government of shrinking civic space, launching brutal assaults on labour centres, and weaponising the criminal justice system against perceived opponents through lawfare.
He stated, “Since the inception of this government in 2023, we have observed dwindling civic spaces, the brutal assault on labour centres, and the weaponisation via lawfare of the criminal justice system. The war declared on political parties — that is, on multi‑party democracy — by a regime tiptoeing into totalitarianism.”
Questions Raised Over INEC’s Role in Party Primaries
Udenta also questioned the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) conduct during party primaries, asking why INEC under Tinubu halted primaries on May 30, suggesting the commission did not expect opposition parties to succeed.
Meanwhile, INEC has suspended an electoral officer allegedly linked to the recent unauthorised disclosure of voter data. The suspension was announced by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, during a fireside chat organised by the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa in Abuja.
The controversy stems from the circulation of voter registration details belonging to actor and politician Emeka Ike during a dispute arising from a political party primary election in the Federal Territory. INEC said preliminary findings indicate its ICT infrastructure was not hacked and that there has been no wider compromise of the voter register.
