Peter Obi Urges Tinubu to Ensure Free, Fair, Credible 2027 Election
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to guarantee a free, fair and credible election ahead of the 2027 polls.
Obi dismissed the notion that the backing of nearly all state governors would automatically secure Tinubu’s victory, arguing that governors do not always reflect the will of the people.
Parties Lack Ideology and Corruption Claims
The former Anambra State governor also criticised Nigeria’s political parties for lacking any clear ideology, noting that politicians accused of corruption are often absolved once they defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said, “Thirty‑six governors support the president, but the people in the states are not necessarily with them. A governor’s endorsement is not the same as popular support. What I am asking for is a free, fair and credible election, which will become part of Tinubu’s legacy.”
Obi urged Nigerian youths, whose lives and futures are at stake, to join him in demanding electoral integrity, reminding them that Tinubu campaigned as a democrat and must now prove it.
Reference to Umaru Yar’Adua’s Example
He pointed to the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, who admitted that his own ascent to office was flawed and vowed to prevent a repeat, even at the cost of losing power. Yar’Adua’s subsequent actions led to elections that were widely regarded as free, fair and credible.
Obi contrasted that with the current political climate, stating that no party in Nigeria today possesses a genuine ideology, and that moving to the APC does not erase a politician’s corrupt past.
