PDP Will Weather Defections, Says South‑South Caucus Chairman
Fred Agbedi, chairman of the South‑South caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives, expressed confidence that the party will overcome its current internal crisis and emerge stronger.
Speaking at a forum organised by the Federated Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bayelsa State Council, Agbedi said the PDP remains a formidable political platform despite recent defections and disagreements in Bayelsa State and elsewhere.
He described the party as “a party of the people” that still possesses the capacity to rebuild, reconnect with Nigerians and provide credible leadership.
Agbedi recalled that the PDP has survived previous political storms and continues to be one of the most recognised parties in the country.
The current wave of defections, he argued, should not be seen as the party’s demise but as a transitional phase that will ultimately strengthen its internal structure.
He pointed to loyal members, committed leaders and solid grassroots support across Bayelsa and the wider South‑South region as foundations for recovery.
Agbedi stressed that the party’s enduring connection with ordinary Nigerians remains one of its greatest assets, noting that many citizens still view the PDP as a platform with a history of broad national participation.
He urged party members not to lose hope, insisting that unity, focus and commitment to reconciliation will enable the PDP to overcome its internal challenges.
The lawmaker added that the party must listen to its members, address grievances and rebuild confidence ahead of future elections.
Agbedi Eyes Senate Bid, Calls for Party Unity
On his own political future, Agbedi said his years of service in the National Assembly have prepared him for higher legislative responsibilities.
His nomination for the Bayelsa West Senatorial District, he said, offers an opportunity for broader representation and continued service to the people.
He highlighted that his tenure in the House of Representatives has given him a deep understanding of legislative processes, constituency needs and national issues, which he is ready to bring to the Senate if elected.
Reiterating his confidence, Agbedi stated that the ongoing defections, especially in Bayelsa, will not destroy the PDP; the party possesses sufficient internal strength to reorganise and stay competitive.
What the PDP needs now, he concluded, is unity, discipline and a renewed commitment from its members, with leaders placing collective interest above personal ambition.
Agbedi remains convinced that the party will emerge from its current challenges stronger and better prepared for the political contests ahead.
