PDP Chieftain Fred Agbedi Claims Goodluck Jonathan Will Run for President in 2027
A senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Fred Agbedi, has stated that former President Goodluck Jonathan intends to seek the presidency in the 2027 general election.
Speaking on Channels Television, Agbedi, who also serves as a member of the House of Representatives, said Jonathan will run on the PDP platform, though he did not specify which faction of the party the former president will align with.
When asked about the faction, Agbedi replied, “Whichever one you want to describe,” indicating uncertainty over the internal party divisions.
He further argued that the faction loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, lacks legal recognition, and its decision to nominate Senator Sandy Onor as its presidential candidate is therefore null and void.
The comments come after a court ruling on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, which affirmed Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the election. The suit, filed by Johnmary Jideobi, had sought to bar Jonathan from presenting himself as a candidate and to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission from processing his name.
The judge examined Sections 1(1), (2), (3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution and concluded that the former president remains qualified to run for office.
